About OpenWithout

OpenWithout is a small independent site run by Tam Vu. It does one job: opening files you can't open on your device — Outlook emails and mailboxes (.msg, .eml, .pst, winmail.dat), Apple Pages, Numbers and Keynote files, contacts (.vcf) and calendar invites (.ics) — reading them and saving them as PDF, Word, Excel or CSV, without uploading the file anywhere.

How the viewers work

  • Emails (.msg, .eml, winmail.dat) are read inside your browser with open-source readers for Outlook .msg, .eml and TNEF, following the formats Microsoft and the IETF publish. The email is displayed in a locked-down frame: scripts inside it never run and remote pictures stay blocked unless you allow them.
  • Pages, Numbers and Keynote files are zip packages of Apple's binary "IWA" data, unpacked in your browser. Numbers spreadsheets are read with numbers-parser, an open-source library, running on your computer through Pyodide (Python in the browser). Pages and Keynote text is read with our own reader, based on the file structure documented by open-source projects (numbers-parser, keynote-parser).
  • Contacts (.vcf) and calendar (.ics) files are read with our own readers for vCard 2.1/3.0/4.0 and iCalendar (RFC 6350, RFC 5545), tested with exports from iPhone, Google, Android and Outlook.
  • Every release is checked against a set of real sample files before it goes live — Outlook messages with attachments and embedded emails, winmail.dat files, .eml files in different character sets, public Pages and Keynote samples, and 86 spreadsheets from the numbers-parser test set, which must give exactly the same cell values as numbers-parser on a normal computer.
